Executive Director

Position Description
Reporting to the board of directors, the executive director will oversee the strategic and operational
efficiency of the organization’s programs and staff. The ideal candidate must possess a strong
entrepreneurial drive, outstanding communication skills, strong leadership qualities, and good planning
and organizational skills to steer and influence the organization towards favorable growth. Exceptional
stewardship and strategic planning skills are required to expand the organization’s public profile as the
leading advocate of women and girls in the State of Hawaiʻi.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Board Relations. Works with the board of directors and committees, informing, assessing, and
addressing issues that affect the organization.
● Leads the organization in a manner that supports and guides the organization’s mission
and vision as defined by the board of directors.
● Communicates effectively with the board and provides, in a timely and accurate
manner, all information necessary for the board to function properly and to make
informed decisions.
● Works with the board to develop a strategic roadmap for the organization’s continued
evolution.
● Provides the board with feedback on progress towards achieving goals in accordance to
the board approved strategic plan and budget.
● Encourages board members’ appropriate involvement in the organization’s full range of
activities.
● Assists in identifying and recruiting new board members.

2. Mission and Strategy. Works with the board, staff, and other stakeholders to ensure that the
mission is fulfilled through the articulation of the organization’s strategic roadmap and vision.
● Models the organization’s values.
● Inspires excellence at all levels of the organization.
● Implements programs that carry out the organization’s mission.
3. Fundraising. Works with the director of development (if one exists), board, staff, and advisors to
develop and implement fundraising strategies.
● Maximizes contributions from foundations, businesses, and individuals.
● Serves as an active fundraiser for the organization by meeting with donors with the
director of development.

4. Financial Management. Maintains WFH’s fiscal health by operating within the approved budget
● Submits to the board a proposed annual budget that is to be approved by the board.
● Submits monthly financial statements to the board treasurer before the monthly board
meeting.
● Fosters an atmosphere of transparency and accountability.

5. Marketing and Communications. Serves as the face and public spokesperson for the
organization.
● Clearly articulates the organization’s mission, vision, advocacy agenda, and impact on
the community.
● Works with the board, staff, and key community members to strengthen the
organization’s advocacy and public profile.
● Champion the organization’s brand in person and across digital platforms.
● Serve as the face of the organization and actively participate in external events, both
increasing visibility, credibility, and brand in the market, and develop strategic
partnerships in order to increase community awareness.

6. Operations. Manages the day-to-day operations and programs, including managing staff and
volunteers so they are mission-aligned.
● Hires and retains competent and qualified staff.
● Oversees the policies and procedures that the board have approved.
● Fosters a collaborative team culture.
● As an executive you are required to properly, and in a timely manner, document all
activities you have undertaken relevant to your role. This includes, but is not limited to,
recording major points of all meetings, decisions and actions taken in the performance
of executive’s duties. This documentation must be accurate, complete, and maintained
in an organized manner to ensure transparency and accountability. It must be
documented and recorded in a place accessible to relevant parties, including but not
limited to staff and board members.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, public relations, or communications preferred.
2. An understanding of fiscal management.
3. Public relations, marketing, and fundraising experience.
4. Entrepreneurial mindset, with innovative approach to business planning.
5. Nonprofit leadership and board relations experience preferred.
6. Highly ethical behavior.
7. Effective communicator.
8. Exceptional interpersonal skills.
9. Motivational skills – the ability to inspire and motivate others and individuals who are self
motivated.
10. An understanding of Hawaiʻi’s women and girls philanthropy.

WORKPLACE EXPECTATIONS
The Executive Director role can be a hybrid role. Womenʻs Fund of Hawaiʻi maintains an office in Honolulu. Staff are expected to be able to attend Womenʻs Fund meetings and events on Oʻahu. This includes meetings with staff, donors, community members, and monthly in-person board meetings. The Executive Director must be available to attend evening and weekend functions.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
Womenʻs Fund of Hawaiʻi offers a competitive salary commensurate with market rates and individual experience and skills.

After a pre-screen call, qualified applicants will be invited to interview with the WFH executive search committee. The interview will include a series of questions to better understand the applicantʻs qualifications for the role. The interview will also include a role play scenario that reflects scenarios likely to be encountered in the day to day work of the executive director.
